Abstract:
Men’s society with its worldview, value system, norms and rules of behavior, material and objective world, military, economic activities and leisure, largely determined the vital activity of traditional Ossetian society. In a comprehensive study of men’s subcultures, an important role is assigned to traditional male games, competitions and fun, the roots of which go back to the deep archaic ritual – magical ritual, which eventually transformed into games. The relevance of the study of men’s games and entertainment is determined by their deep integration into many spheres of the traditional society, due to the multifunctionality of competitions, which covers the organization of leisure, entertainment, aesthetic and ritual components, as well as the socialization of the younger male generation, its education in the system of male moral values. Success in competitions determined the status of a man in traditional society, became the key to his social well-being. The appeal to the problem of the men’s subcultural complex is also caused by social significance, in particular, modern socio- cultural content, which notes the formation of various male associations on professional, sports, traditional religious, leisure and other grounds. The need for scientific comprehension of their activities also actualizes the study of the historical experience of male subcultures. The article presents a study of traditional equestrian games of Ossetians, which have always been very popular among the male population of the entire Caucasus, Central Asia and other regions. Analysis of ethnographic, folklore and linguistic sources made it possible to establish the existence of a close connection between folk equestrian games and the ritual and ritual complex of Ossetians; to reveal the existence of the division of Ossetian equestrian games into individual, doubles and group. Particular attention is paid to the characteristics of stereotypes of male behavior during equestrian games and competitions. The influence of equestrian games, competitions and fun on the formation of the male mentality, and in general the male culture, has been established.
