The objective of the study is to systematize the chronology of information in Georgian chronicles containing the Alanian name/title “Bagatar”. The relevance of the study follows from the chronological uncertainty of the presentation of this information in the Georgian medieval annalistic tradition. The main sources of the study were the Georgian chronicles of the 11th–14th centuries “The Life of Vakhtang Gorgasali”, “The Chronicle of Kartli”, “The Histories and Eulogies of the Sovereigns”, “The Chronograph”, as well as Ossetian and Georgian legends and the epigraphy of the Nuzal Church. The etymology of this name/title in the paper is based on information from the Chinese chronicles of the 6th–9th centuries “The Book of Sui”, “The History of the Northern Dynasties”, “The Book of Tang” and “The Book of Wei”. The information from the specified sources corresponding to the stated research objective were analyzed and related using historical-genetic, structural and narrative methods. The result of the study was the conclusion that the chronological order of the use of the name/title “Bagatar” in Ossetian and Georgian folklore and in Georgian chronicles, on the one hand, reflects the real sequence of the corresponding historical events, on the other hand, it may be the result of mutual contaminations and interpolations of this information in written sources and in the folklore tradition, as well as be the result of insertions made by the compilers and copyists of Georgian codices. Meanwhile the study notes that the question of the historical etymology of the name/title “Bagatar” remains debatable, despite the information in the paper from the specified Chinese chronicles on its use by the Eastern Mongol peoples from the 6th century, inasmuch as it cannot be resolved without a special study.
