Abstract:
This article is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the first Ossetian studies journal, a vital component of the scientific infrastructure. The journal “Izvestia SOIGSI” is not only the result of the work of several generations of scholars, not only an “archive of science compressed by history”. The issues discussed in the journal’s pages remain relevant today: addressing them informs contemporary academic and public discourse, particularly issues related to the functioning of the Ossetian language, its dialects and vernaculars, its teaching methods, primers and textbooks, etc.; the origins of Nart studies, the first attempts to study the history of Ossetians, including those who migrated to Turkey; and other pressing issues that laid the foundations of Ossetian studies as a comprehensive academic field, initially represented by linguistics, folklore studies, literary criticism, history, ethnography, archeology, and art history. Articles, commentaries, and notes provide a basis for determining individual authors’ positions on the discussed issues in the humanities, significantly expanding the historiography of certain topics. Bibliographic reviews of Russian and foreign works on the journal’s topics enhance understanding of the level of scholarly and public discourse. Analysis of the journal’s issues provides a comprehensive understanding of the publication, its objectives and program, structure, editors and authors, subject matter, language, and style of published materials, design features, frequency, volume, and more. The journal has preserved the names of researchers who stood at the origins of science, including those little known and undeservedly forgotten. Together with the surviving reviews of the articles, these materials become a solid source base for research into the problem of the formation and development of humanities in Ossetia, in the broad context of its interconnection, and sometimes direct dependence on socio-political, social and cultural processes in the country.
