Abstract: The relevance of the study is determined by need to develop approaches and to provide an objective analysis of the North Caucasian peoples’ contribution to the Victory the Great Patriotic War. Despite the extensive historiography, regional aspects of the partisan resistance, particularly its systemic problems, have been studied fragmentarily. Scientific novelty of the paper lies in a critical analysis based on archival materials, which makes it possible to identify the deep-rooted, rather than just superficial, causes of the movement’s difficulties. The study aims at identifying and analyzing the key systemic problems in the organization of material, technical, and logistical support, as well as management structure of the partisan movement in Kabardino-Balkaria during the German occupation 1942-1943. The research is based on historicism and objectivity principles, using historical-genetic, problem-chronological, and statistical methods. It was found that the partisan movement faced a complex of problems: belated establishment and weak coordination by the Southern Staff of Partisan Movement, a shortage of modern weapons and equipment, uneven food supply, and initial misuse of detachments for non-core tasks. The movement reduction was caused by a combination of factors: mobilization of some fighters to the front and a deliberate decision by the NKVD leadership to reduce numbers. This measure was aimed at optimizing the movement and improving its manageability amid supply shortages. The key factor that improved effectiveness was creation of a centralized Unified Partisan Detachment in October 1942, which optimized resources and established successful cooperation with the regular units of the Red Army.
