Abstract:

This article examines for the first time a newspaper political caricature published in the newspaper “Socialist Ossetia” during the Great Patriotic War. The topic is rooted in the scientific and socially relevant problem of enemy image formation. Political caricature served as a means of ideologically influencing the public consciousness. Political cartoons serve several functions, but the most significant is satirical, which achieves the effect of debunking carefully crafted images and ridiculing those who, for example, harbored aggressive plans of conquest. The influence of artistic techniques aimed at promoting Soviet heroism and self-sacrifice, even during the most tragic periods of the Great Patriotic War, is examined. The ideological message of political newspaper cartoons is clear and understandable to every citizen of the USSR. The purpose of this article is to examine the formation of enemy images through satire and cartoons published in the regional newspaper “Socialist Ossetia,” published in the city of Ordzhonikidze. The study was conducted using B.N. Shirokorad’s cartoons published in this newspaper. The artist’s works embodied a unity of verbal and visual techniques: they shaped a negative image of the fascist military-political elite in the minds of fellow citizens through cognitive metaphors and visual zoologization; they clearly modeled and delineated images of “us” and “them.” Comparative-historical and retrospective methods, as well as critical discourse analysis, were employed. The study of Shirokorad’s cartoons revealed a close relationship between verbal and graphic components, which possess significant propaganda potential. The subtle humor and sarcasm in his cartoons shaped a recognizable image of the enemy, making them comical and pitiful, weak and unthreatening, which was crucial for both soldiers on the front lines and the population in the rear. The tactics and artistic devices identified during the study can be used in the analysis of polycode texts in political cartoons.
