Abstract:
Z.M. Salagaeva is a prominent figure in philological scholarship of the 20th and early 21st centuries. Her scholarly legacy is multifaceted. Zoya Mironovna dedicated many decades to teaching, rising from a lab assistant to the head of the Russian Literature Department and a Doctor of Philology. Her research focused on Russian and Ossetian literature, Russian literary criticism, folklore, and mythology. The work of K.L. Khetagurov, to whom she dedicated her PhD dissertation and first monograph, “Kosta Khetagurov and Ossetian Folk Art”, occupied a special place in her scholarly work. This book was not only a significant contribution to Khetagurov studies but also one of the best studies of the theory and practice of folklore and mythology. This monograph, still relevant today, provides a thorough scholarly examination of all aspects of folklore and mythology in K. Khetagurov’s work, both in poetry and prose, including journalism and epistolary writing. A significant focus is on the theory of folklore and mythology, their similarities and differences, interactions and mutual influences. Of particular value is Salagaeva’s exploration of Ossetian oral folklore, beginning with ancient history, including Herodotus, who described the folklore of the Scythians, Sarmatians, and Alans. Drawing on the works of V.F. Miller, J. Dumézil, V.I. Abaev, and many others, the researcher provides a detailed description of all genres of Ossetian, Caucasian, and world folklore, as well as their use in Khetagurov’s legacy. Salagaeva’s research talent, meticulousness, and thoroughness in accumulating scientific information, coupled with her love for folklore, ensured that her interest in it continued in her subsequent scholarly works. The connection with folklore and mythology is present in her monographs, “From the Nuzal Inscription to the Novel”, “Four Essays on Ossetian Prose”, and numerous articles tracing the path from the ancient folklore of the ancestors of modern Ossetians to the emergence of the first written literary monuments. Examining the work of Ossetian writers of the 19th and 20th centuries, Salagaeva also draws attention to the place and role of folklore in their works. The purpose of this paper is to examine the issues of folklore and mythology in Salagaeva’s scholarly legacy. Literary criticism methods were applied to analyze her scholarly work. The scientific novelty of this article lies in its first comprehensive examination of the issue of folklore in the scientific heritage of Z.M. Salagaeva.
