THE FORMATION OF P.I. TCHAIKOVSKY DAGESTAN MUSIC COLLEGE (1926-1940s)

Litinsky, Boris B.
Izvestia SOIGSI. 2026. Issue 60 (99). P.53-60.
Abstract:

This article examines the development of secondary vocational education in Dagestan in the 1920s and 1930s, using the example of the formation and development of P.I. Tchaikovsky Dagestan Music College, which celebrates its centenary this year. Particular attention is paid to the role of its leaders – its first director, G.A. Gasanov, and his successor, I.G. Savchenko. The article demonstrates their contribution to the formation of a unique teaching staff comprised of graduates from leading Russian and European conservatories, the development of curricula, and the preservation of facilities under challenging conditions. The article also examines the difficulties of the music college’s integration with theatrical and educational experiments of the late 1920s and early 1930s, as well as the subsequent restoration of the educational process from 1932 to 1939. The author emphasizes that, despite the most acute material and everyday problems (the absence of its own building and dormitory), and the political campaigns of the 1920s and 1930s, the teaching staff managed to transform the technical school into the largest cultural center in Dagestan and educate a galaxy of local musical professionals, laying the foundations of an academic music education in which the Russian classical school was combined with local national flavor.
