Abstract: Georgy (Gappo, Georg) Vasilyevich Baev (1869-1939) was an Ossetian public and political figure, educator, publicist, and translator. The SOIGSI Scientific Archive contains his personal collections (F. Baev G.V.; F. Tsomaeva T.A.), which not only contain much interesting and valuable information about his personal life and work, but also reflect many issues of the political, economic, and socio-cultural development of the peoples of the Terek region in the early 20th century. This article presents the correspondence of the renowned publisher E.A. Gutnov, who lived in Berlin from 1912 with G.V. Baev, who emigrated to Constantinople in 1921. This correspondence is an indispensable source for researching the biographies of two outstanding compatriots and reveals the personalities, inner experiences, and characters of Baev and Gutnov. Gutnov’s correspondence with Baev touches on the most important aspects of the émigré experience: leaving Ossetia, life and work-related problems, job searches, homesickness, integration into a new sociocultural environment, dialogue and communication with another culture, partial acculturation, and much more. Gutnov took a lively and active part in the life of Baev — his compatriot, teacher, and friend. In early 1922, at Gutnov’s invitation, Baev received a visa and permission to enter Germany. This publication of documents reveals the complex journey undertaken by Yevgeny Gutnov and his wife, Frida, to enable Baev to move to Berlin and adapt to his new surroundings. Keywords: G.V.
