TRADITIONAL LABOR ETHICS AS A SOURCE FOR FORMATION OF THE ETHNOPHORE CHARACTERISTICS AMONG THE OSSETIANS.

Abstract:
The article presents a historical and ethnographic analysis of folk labor ethics as part of the ethnocultural heritage of the Ossetians. Using a historical and retrospective approach, drawing on written ethnographic sources and empirical data (a survey conducted among ethnic Ossetian students), the author examines the subjective understanding of work ethics and values over time: from the period when custom still reigned supreme (the 19th to early 20th centuries) to the present day. The study is divided into two parts, the first of which analyzes moral and ethical beliefs in relation to specific aspects of work activity common to Ossetians of this period, in particular the custom of mutual labor assistance, as well as labor relations within the extended patriarchal family with its specific institutions and ethical and communicative norms. Particular attention is paid to the subjective understanding of the quality of industriousness and its dynamics. The second part, based entirely on an analysis of empirical data, revealed that the sphere of labor, despite its importance in the survival of the ethnic group during the acute land shortage of the “mountain” period, did not acquire subjective connotations of “high” morality. In their subjective perceptions of their compatriots of yesteryear, young Ossetians prefer to focus on images more consistent with a militant ethos. At the same time, the survey revealed that, relative to their time, students highly value labor as a means of achieving success. The quality of industriousness is also present in their subjective understanding of the image of the “best” representative of their ethnic group. The results of the analysis suggest that, at the static level of ethnic self-awareness, values characteristic of a militant ethos predominate among young Ossetians. At the dynamic level, the values of labor are represented in positions that can be considered leading.
