LEXICAL-THEMATIC GROUPS OF TERMS FOR TRADITIONAL WOMEN’S HANDICRAFTS AMONG THE OSSETIANS.

Abstract:
This article examines the specialised vocabulary associated with traditional women’s handicrafts (embroidery, ornamentation of clothing and household items). The relevance of the study is driven by the need to preserve and provide a linguocultural conceptualisation of this endangered craft terminology, which serves as a vital transmitter of Ossetian material culture. The aim of the research is the systematisation and structural-semantic analysis of lexical units describing the processes of manufacturing and decorating clothing elements, domestic textiles, horse tack, and similar items. The primary material comprises an extensive corpus of craft vocabulary, including names of raw materials, sewing techniques, tools, and finished products. The study identified and described key lexical-semantic groups; a high degree of detail of needlework vocabulary layer of the Ossetian language was established. It reveals that this lexical stratum reflects the multi-stage nature of the technological cycle (from the preparation of threads and the compacting of the braid to the burnishing of the embroidered pattern) alongside the narrow specialization of the craftswomen (weaver, embroiderer). The research demonstrates a close connection between the analyzed terminological system and elements of traditional attire horse harnesses, and weapon baldrics. Furthermore, it establishes that the craft and needlework terminological system of the Ossetian language constitutes a complexly structured framework that preserves unique ethnocultural and historical information. The collected material may be used in further ethnolinguistic studies, as well as in lexicographical practice for the compilation of explanatory dictionaries.
