As an artistic and aesthetic form of folk wisdom – the basis of the Ossetian philosophical consciousness – mythology and folklore saturate literature with conceptual existential and ontological ideas, one of which, the most important from a worldview perspective, shapes the concept of the individual destiny of man. Ossetian religious consciousness expresses the fatal predetermination of fate. With the disintegration of tribal relationships, when people began to find their own “self”, ideas about individual destiny emerged in the public consciousness. Ossetian religious consciousness expresses the fatal predetermination of fate. The disintegration of tribal relations, when a person began to find his “self”, leads to the emergence in the consciousness of society of the idea of the individual destiny of a person. Over time, evolving consciousness raised the question of the degree of freedom and lack of freedom of man from the tribal collective, the degree of freedom that determines his fate. Thus, a civilizational “correction” introduces into the understanding of the fatal predetermination of fate: its dependence on the individual’s choice of certain values, good or evil in life, in actions, and in behavior. This process manifested itself in folklore, which reflected the historical stages of the formation of the Ossetian people’s ideas about the individual destiny of a person. As an artistic and aesthetic form of expression of national self-awareness, folklore comprehends the role of ethical and aesthetic categories: good and evil, beautiful and ugly, tragic and comic, based on which it creates its own concept of fate, and even elevates them to the rank of a principle for shaping human destiny. In the 19th century, as ideas of social justice and class struggle took hold in the Ossetian public consciousness, folkloric interpretations of the concept of fate were significantly enriched. Thus, in accordance with popular moral and ethical ideals, folklore created a national myth – a myth of true nobility, chivalry, values, the behavior and psychology of man they dictated. This myth is embodied in the figure of a real historical figure: Chermen Tlattata. He was doomed to die, as the socio-historical circumstances of his life did not yet create the conditions for his victory. However, even though his death, the hero affirmed the most important national values of human life: honor, dignity, courage. The purpose of this article is to understand the philosophical and ethical concept of fate, shaped by the Ossetian folklore and literary tradition.
