GAGA-AUL SPRING AS A SYMBOL OF REVOLUTION: IMAGES OF CAUCASIAN NATURE AND THEIR IDEOLOGICAL AND ARTISTIC FUNCTION IN THE DZAKHO GATUEV’S CREATIVITY.

Abstract:
This article denotes the main ways of expressing a sense of nature in the work of Dzakho (Konstantin Alekseevich) Gatuev (1892-1938), a prominent author in Ossetian Russian-language literature. It also identifies the functional potential of the corresponding images and motifs, their symbolic meaning, and the inherent or specific artistic expression of the author’s ideology and worldview, a highlander by birth and a revolutionary by conviction. The article examines the characteristics and tendencies of nature depiction, characteristic of all of Gatuev’s work and partly related to the influence of modernism, and specifically addresses one of his most important works, the novel “Gaga-aul.” A conventional gradation of the significance of the aesthetic devices used in his novel is outlined, conditioned by the author’s perception of the Caucasian natural world and complex revolutionary events: the semantic content of individual, episodic images (wind, snow, stone, cliff, mountain, ice, rain, grass, river, stream, steam) and motifs (thunderstorm, spring) is consistently revealed. The role of animalistic imagery in the work is noted. The relevance of this article is dictated by its relevance to one of the most important areas of contemporary Russian literary criticism: the study of artistic characteristics and value systems in the literatures of the peoples of the Russian Federation, particularly in translingual (Russian-language) Ossetian literature. This article represents the first attempt to explore the specific manifestations of a sense of nature in the prose of Dzakho Gatuev. The article’s methodology is based on a combination of historical-cultural, sociological, and integrated approaches to the analysis of literary texts, with particular attention to the category of a sense of nature and its significance in the poetics of literary works.
