ALANIAN AND OSSETIAN TRIPOD TABLES

Tuallagov, Alan A.
Izvestia SOIGSI. 2020. IIS 36 (75).
Abstract:
The article compares the constructive features of wooden tables from funerary monuments
of the Alanian culture of the early Middle Ages and traditional Ossetian culture. An idea of the
genetic connection of the Alanian and Ossetian tables, as well as a definition of the semantics of
the Ossetian ones proposed by some researchers was stated without such analysis, which did not
provide the intended solutions with an objective scientific basis. The current situation determines the
scientific relevance of the topic. The scientific novelty of the research consists in the consideration of
original archaeological and ethnographic materials, most of which are used for the first time, in the
course of a comparative analysis of their general and particular constructive features. Such analysis
is carried out for the first time. The main objective of the study is the scientific verification of the
idea of considering Ossetian tables as derivatives of Alanian tables. In the course of the comparative
analysis, descriptive, typological and comparative research methods were used with the photo and
graphic fixation of the studied objects. In the course of the study, two types of wooden tripod tables
of the Alanian culture were identified, some design features of which may indicate the presence
of corresponding subtypes. Their concretization will require further study. Alanian tables also
give reason to believe that in addition to home production, tables served as objects of handicraft
production. Ossetian tables are undoubtedly genetically related to these samples and their types.
They preserve and develop certain, both general and, most significantly, specific private, constructive
and ornamental features of Alanian tables. The probable development of some structural details
during the turning of manufactured samples is also observed.
