Abstract:
The article considers the Nart epic as the main mythical epic of Ossetian people — a myth
filled with folkloric elements. The article shows that the Ossetian Nart epic, like all epic texts, is
endowed with such elements and images as the glorified heroes, enemies of these heroes, hyperbolic
fairy births, copper-bodied invulnerable heroes, hand-to-hand fighting, and such fairy-tale symbols
as waigs, peri, etc. Among mythical motifs, similarities were found in some events of the Iranian epos
«Shahname» Firdousi and the Ossetian Nart epos related to the snow motif. The hopeless situations
of the heroes in the formidable snow as a result of Barman»s witchcraft in the war with the Turanian
army during the reign of Kei-Khosrov, described in Shahnameh, and the stories «The Nameless Son
of Uryzmag», «The Battle of Uryzmag and One-eyed Uaig» and «Soslan and Sons of Tara» from
Ossetian Nart epic were analyzed.
Keywords: fiction, Ossetian Nart legends, Shahnameh, seasons, winter concept
