SEMANTIC CHANGE OATH-EATING<OATH-TAKING IN THE OSSETIAN LANGUAGE

Abstract:
The importance of oath procedures and formulas, inherited and preserved by the
Ossetian linguistic culture, is undeniable. In the Ossetian language, as in a number of other
languages, the idea of taking an oath is conveyed by verb-nominal phrases. In most modern
languages, with the exception of Farsi, the nominal part of such combinations has the
meaning “oath”, which is in a certain contradiction with the semantics of verbal components.
In our opinion, in these phrases there was a fossilization of the phonetic appearance of the
roots, the semantics of which underwent significant changes. In this paper, it is proposed
to consider the semantics of nominal components as the result of metonymic transfers of
the original nouns of real semantics. In order to restore the original semantics of Ossetian
lexemes, a wide range of phonetically and semantically acceptable lexemes is considered,
the peculiarity of the phraseological regulation that determines the valence of verbal units
is taken into account, the results of the analysis of microcontexts of the use of Ossetian
lexemes are summarized, relevant paremiological units are analyzed. The expansion of the
search area for etymons gives grounds for the revision of some lexemes of other languages,
increasing the depth of their retrospection and the area of their functioning, in order to
establish a wider range of cognates of known lexemes.
