ON THE QUESTION OF THE CHRISTIANIZATION OF ALANIA

Abstract:
The article considers the process of Christianization of Alanya. Written and archaeological
sources on the Christianization of Alanya are analyzed and systematized. The main points of the
penetration of Christian dogmas into the environment of the Alans are traced. It is proposed to
subdivide conditionally the process of Christianization of Alanya into three stages: early, middle
and late. The features of each of the stages of Christianization are considered. The duration and
complexity of the process of Christianization of Alanya is indicated. The role of the Alan Metropolis
in the formation of statehood, spiritual and ethnic culture of the Alans of the North Caucasus is
shown. The question was raised about the urgent adoption of measures at the federal level and
with the involvement of UNESCO to preserve the oldest Christian temples on the territory of the
Russian Federation – the Alanian domed temples of the 10th century of Zelenchuk, Kuban and
Teberda. The significance of the adoption of Orthodoxy by the Alans for the fate of the Ossetian
people is noted.
