ALANS IN THE MONGOLIAN SOUTH CHINESE MILITARY CAMPAIGNS UNDER THE RULE OF MÖNGKE KHAAN (1253–1259)

Abstract:
The military campaigns in South China, which took place under Khaan Möngke, formed one of
the stages of the Mongol conquest of the Southern Song Empire, which lasted more than forty years.
The analysis of information from sources regarding the participation of Alanian warriors in the
campaigns of this stage determined the novelty of the study. Its relevance follows from the absence
in the scientific tradition of works considering the participation of the Alans in concrete events of
the Mongol conquest of South China. The purpose of the study was to consider the main events that
made up these campaigns, and to present the participation in these events of the Alanian warriors
who were in the Far East. The study used historical-typological, historical-systemic, comparativehistorical, systemic-chronological methods, as well as methods of scientific translation used to work
with Chinese medieval texts. The relevant information from the Chinese official chronicles of the
imperial Song and Yuan dynasties, the unofficial Chinese chronicle “The Comprehensive Mirror
Helping the Rule”, chronicles of Rashid al-din as well as some information from the writings of
Bar Hebraeus and Hayton of Corycus were considered. The use of the original text of the official
“History of the Yuan [dynasty]” made it possible to eliminate certain discrepancies contained in the
translations of the relevant information from the biographies of the Alanian commanders presented
in this chronicle. As a result of the study, it was found that a number of Alanian commanders took
part in all the campaigns that made up the stage of the Mongol conquest of South China, which
fell during the reign of Khaan Möngke: in 1253–1257 they participated in campaigns against the
states of Dali, Annam, Burma, Laos and Tibet, while in 1258–1259 they participated in the Mongol
campaign directed against the Southern Song Empire. It is assumed that the Alanian commanders
participated in these campaigns at the head of their guard units. However, the exact number of these
divisions cannot be ascertained, since the “History of the Yuan [dynasty]” does not contain specific
information about this.
