KOSTA KHETAGUROV’S POEM "FATIMA" AND ITS TRANSLATION INTO ENGLISH IN THE CONTEXT OF INTERCULTURAL DIALOGUE

Abstract:
Works of literature and literary translation play an important role in the process of interethnic
communication and intercultural dialogue. The article examines the poem "Fatima" authored by the
founder of Ossetian literature and Ossetian literary language Kosta Khetagurov, written in Russian,
and its translation into English by the English poet and translator Walter May, from the perspective of
intercultural dialogue. The structure and the content of the article involve a consistent consideration
of the following issues: the concept of intercultural dialogue (ICD) → a literary text in the context
of ICD → intercultural dialogue in Kosta Khetagurov’s poem "Fatima" → literary translation as a
form of ICD → the translation of the poem "Fatima" into English from the perspective of ICD. In the
course of work, the methods of continuous sampling and component analysis, as well as descriptive
and comparative methods were used. In the poem "Fatima" the author (due to the plot and with the
help of toponyms, ethnonyms and personal names) created a collective image and outlined an overall
pattern of life of the Caucasus peoples, whose centuries-old neighbourship has largely contributed
to their rapprochement and to the formation of the generalizing term "Caucasian", although
despite the apparent uniformity many of these peoples have different origins, history and culture.
The comparative analysis of the original poem "Fatima" and its English translation showed the
preservation of the poetic meter by the translator in cases with alternate, Balliol, enclosing and triple
rhymes (all types of rhymes that are found in the original), and the employment of grammatical and
lexical-grammatical translation transformations.
