Abstract:
The collaboration of two famous archaeologists-kavkazovologists Evgenia Georgievna Pchelina
(1895–1972) and Ivan Pavlovich Shcheblykin (1884–1947) falls on the 30s of the twentieth century.
As the first reliably known experience of their cooperative work, they participated in the restoration
of the Shirvanshahs’ Palace in Baku, carried out by the Azerbaijan Central Directorate for the
Protection of Monuments (AzCDPM). From October 16 to December 31, 1932, E.G. Pchelina
supervised the work on clearing the premises of the palace; I.P. Shcheblykin, who was at that time
an employee of the AzCDPM, also took part in these works. Materials of these works of Pchelina are
kept along her personal papers in the St. Petersburg Branch of the Archive of the Russian Academy
of Sciences. There are also letters from Shcheblykin from 1933, containing not only a reflection on
the cooperative work with Pchelina in Baku, but also information about the progress of restoration
work on the territory of the palace in 1933, after the departure of Pchelina to Moscow and then to
Leningrad. Of particular interest is the information from the letters about the archaeological work
on the Absheron Peninsula in 1933. The joint fruitful work in Baku became the key to the future
successful cooperation of the two archaeologists in 1936 for the purpose of the pre-renovation study of
the Ossetian sanctuary Recom in the Tsey gorge. The joint work of Pchelina and Scheblykin was not
long (2.5 months in Baku and 2 months in Recom), but significant and productive. The publication
of six letters by Shcheblykin to Pchelina from 1933, exclusively saturated with factual material, is
proposed below. The article also describes illustrative material, representing the results of work in the
Shirvanshahs’ Palace and provided to E.G. Pchelina by I.P. Shcheblykin.
