SCIENTIFIC EVENTS OF ST. PETERSBURG FOR THE 1100 TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BAPTISM OF ALANIA

Abstract:
This article is intended to serve as introduction to the present issue of the journal and gives some
information about the scientific events held in 2022 in St. Petersburg, dedicated to the celebration of
the 1100th anniversary of the baptism of Alania. The first scientific event was an international on‑
line seminar, organized on October 12th by the National Library of Russia (NLR); researchers from
Russia, Italy, Spain and Germany participated in it. The seminar was followed by an exhibition held
in October at the NLR with the participation of the Library of the Russian Academy of Sciences and
the Institute of the History of Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IHMC of RAS).
In this occasion, both historical written monuments and modern studies of Ossetian history, culture,
ethnos and language were presented. Another scientific event was the “Fourth Pchelina Readings”,
with a special session “On the 1100th anniversary of the Baptism of Alania”. The readings, organized
by four institutes (St. Petersburg Branch of the Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences, South
Ossetian Research Institute named after Z. N. Vaneev, Institute of History and Archeology of the
Republic of North Ossetia –Alania, the North Ossetian Institute of Humanities and Social Studies
named after V. I. Abayev), were held on December 19 at the St. Petersburg Branch of the Archive
of the Russian Academy of Sciences. During this conference, three exhibitions were presented: “The
Art of Photography by E. G. Pchelina”; “Documents on the Zelenchuk inscription from the funds
of the IHMC RAS”; “Publications on Ossetian studies in the library of the SPbB ARAS”. “Pchelina
Readings” were held on the eve of the opening of a major anniversary exhibition “Treasures of the Alan
Kingdom. On the 1100th anniversary of the Baptism of Alania”, organized with the participation
of several museums and institutes and housed in the halls of the State Hermitage Museum. The
exhibition ran until March 2023 and ended with a scientific conference on March 30‑31, “Alania
before and after the adoption of Christianity: monuments, discoveries, context”.
