FROM THE HISTORY OF NATIONAL SELF-CONSCIOUSNESS: SOSLAN TEMIRKHANOV ABOUT “FOLK RELIGION OF OSSETIANS”

Abstract:
The article is devoted to an important aspect of the work of the Ossetian historian and educator
Soslan Temirkhanov. In his writings, the concept of the “folk religion of the Ossetians” (in church
historiography characterized as “paganism”) was conceptualized as an ancient Indo‑Iranian
monotheism with the cult of the One God‑Creator of the World, the heavenly spirits subordinate
to him, the immortal soul, heaven, hell, the responsibility of man to God. The “folk religion of the
Ossetians” appears as the core of ethnic identity, the basis of social cohesion and survival of the
Ossetian people. In the hymns of the Rig‑Veda translated into Ossetian, the image of God the Creator,
the moral requirements of this religious tradition appear. The concept of Ossetian identity reveals
closeness to many similar theories in world social thought, which are based on “a protest against
the transformation of human dignity into exchange value”. The primordial religion and culture
appear to be idealized, in comparison with the “dirty‑merchant” that comes into society from the
outside. A feature of Ossetian historiography, which comprehended the role of both Christianity
and the Indo‑Iranian religious tradition in the history of Ossetia, is a kind of “monologue” in the
interpretation of this aspect of ethnic history. Canonical Orthodoxy was clearly separated from the
Ossetian “paganism”, although it was awarded detailed characteristics. In turn, the ancient Indo‑
Iranian tradition was considered out of connection and interaction with Christianity in the history,
culture and traditions of the Ossetians. This is a natural stage in understanding the history and
identity of an ethnic group. But the future lies with the research paradigm of dialogue, which allows
us to see religious history in its symbiotic forms, in all its complexity and uniqueness.
