Abstract:
One of the trips of the archaeological season of 1946 by the archaeologist Evgenia G. Pchelina
(1895–1972) was an expedition in the vicinity of Arkhyz, on Bolshoy Zelenchuk – in the area
where a group of Karachai researchers worked in July – August 1940. The main task was to
search for the famous Zelenchuk plate discovered by D. M. Strukov. The search was unsuccessful,
however, it was possible to find other plates containing traces of inscriptions. One of them,
resembling a fish in shape, made Pchelina think of Armenian vishapakars as possible analogies
of the discovered stone. She saw other analogies in two finds by N. I. Veselovsky in 1899 and
1903. However, after a while, the researcher apparently abandoned this idea. The results of the
expedition were partially published in an article by Pchelina 1960. In 2013, V. A. Kuznetsov also
published a report on the results of the expedition, made by Pchelina at the Scientific Council
of the North Ossetian Research Institute in September 1946. Part of the previously unpublished
materials in the form of working notes, photographs and graphic material is stored among
the personal papers of Pchelina is in the St. Petersburg Branch of the Archive of the Russian
Academy of Sciences (SPbB ARAS) and is presented in this article. The issues of preservation
of archaeological monuments raised by Pchelina deserve special attention. The issue of the
discovery in 1946 and the transportation to the State Historical Museum (Moscow) of two
plates with Greek inscriptions, the materials for the study of which are available not only in the
article by Pchelina of 1960, but also in the documents of the SPbB ARAS, as well as the Archive
of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Moscow), requires independent research, in connection
with which this topic it is not affected in this publication.
