COVERAGE OF THE ACTIVITIES OF THE RED ARMY IN THE NORTH CAUCASIAN PRESS DURING THE YEARS OF THE CIVIL WAR IN RUSSIA
Zaseev, Georgy A.
Izvestia SOIGSI. 2023. IIS 49 (88).
Abstract: The article is devoted to the problem of covering the activities of the Red Army in the North
Caucasian periodical press of the era of the Civil War in Russia. On the example of such regional
publications as “Kommunist”, “Gorskaya Pravda” and “Gorskaya bednota”, the author analyzes the
information and agitation and propaganda potential of newspaper periodicals in strengthening Soviet
power during the formation of Soviet statehood and the outbreak of the Civil War in 1918-1922. It
is shown that the newspapers actively worked to strengthen the image of the Red Army, published
materials that were designed to awaken in the masses an extremely positive attitude towards the
fighters who defended the interests of the proletarian republic. The article provides examples of
propaganda typical of Soviet periodicals of that period, directed against anti-Bolshevik Poland and
the White movement. Examples of how Vladikavkaz publications carried out campaigns against
Generals Denikin and Wrangel on their pages are considered. Attention is paid to publications that set
themselves the task of rallying the Red Army and the mountain population of the Caucasus, agitating
the mountaineers to join the army. The activities of publications in the matter of agitation of the
civilian population for the implementation of charitable events in aid of the Red Army are analyzed.
Using the materials of periodicals as an example, it is shown how the Red Army participated in
peaceful socialist construction, how special command courses were created and promoted, designed
to strengthen the backbone of the armed forces of the Soviet republic. The relevance of the article lies
in the insufficient number of scientific works in modern historiography that would reveal the topic of
covering the activities of the Workers ‘and Peasants’ Army in the periodical press of the RSFSR. Even
less studied are the materials on the Red Army in the periodicals of the national regions of the North
Caucasus. The aim of the work is to study the ideological role of regional publications in the overall
work of covering the diverse activities of the Red Army. The novelty of the article lies in the fact that,
for the first time, the materials of the Caucasian, mainly of the Terek region, periodicals, aimed at
strengthening the influence of the Red Army, giving an idea of the main activities of the armed forces
of the RSFSR during the Civil War and creating a positive image of the Red Army for the general
reader, are considered in detail. The main method used in the work is the method of content analysis
of newspaper publications. The conclusion is made about the significant role of the periodical press in
the ideological popularization of the Workers ‘and Peasants’ Army in the North Caucasus.
