ON THE SPELLING PECULIARITIES IN THE TEXTS “NARTA KADÆGS” BY K.TS. GUTIEV
Darchieva, Madina V.
Izvestia SOIGSI. 2023. IIS 49 (88).
Abstract: The texts of the Ossetian epic “Narta” have many different publications. Among them – a five-
volume collection prepared by K.Ts. Gutiev. The first volume was published as a separate book, the
rest of the texts were systematically published on the pages of the literary magazine “Our Era” in
different years. The work done by Gutiev, made it possible to take a different look at the opinion
that has been established in folklore about the existence of the Ossetian epic in the form of disparate
kadags that do not constitute an integral epic. The publication was ambiguously perceived by
folklorists-contemporaries of the compiler. The difficult fate of the five-volume collection of epic texts
of Ossetian folklore “Narta kadægs” was determined, among other things, by the spelling used by
the compiler, which differs from generally accepted language norms. When publishing texts by K.Ts.
Gutiev relied on the principles dicated by him in the manuscript “The Theory of Ossetian Writing”.
The main disagreements concern the spelling of case forms of personal pronouns, compound verbs,
nominal composites, cases of setting an apostrophe, and other issues of Ossetian spelling that are
currently being discussed, which determines the relevance of this study. The author of the article
made an attempt to analyze some of the spelling principles used by Gutiev when publishing epic texts,
conclusions were drawn about the correlation of the spelling plan with the levels of the language. The
study used methods of linguistic analysis of the text, in particular, in line with explanatory, as well as
methods of analysis of words’ definitions. The interdisciplinary nature of the study dictated the need
to turn to the comparative historical method and the methods of source study. The scientific novelty
of the work lies in the fact that for the first time materials from the personal archive of the scientist
K.Ts. Gutiev, containing a special look at the Ossetian orthography; the expediency of preserving the
original spelling in the forthcoming full book edition of the five-volume collection “Narta kadægs” is
substantiated.
