Abstract: The issue of women’s emancipation at the beginning of the twentieth century occupied a large
place in the development of social thought in both European countries and Russia, including its
suburbs. In the Ossetian public discourse, the “women’s issue” was raised, as a rule, in the context
of the struggle against prejudices and remnants of the past, where the local intelligentsia was
particularly active. This publication presents an essay by the famous Ossetian writer, poet, educator,
public figure, revolutionary, organizer of science and education of the Soviet era Tsomak Gadiyev
“Ossetian Woman”, published in the famous feminist magazine “Women’s Herald” in 1908. In
studies of Gadiev’s work, the essay in question was not so noticeable, and it is not mentioned in
the dissertations devoted to Gadiev’s educational and pedagogical activities. Meanwhile, it is of
particular interest to researchers of social thought in Ossetia, gender processes and other issues
of a socio-cultural nature, despite the fact that it contains many judgments that raise questions.
Gadiyev’s description of the situation of the Ossetian woman and the socio-cultural environment
that defines it as a whole seems to be excessively negative and does not always correspond to
reality. The article presents the main characteristics of gender processes in Ossetia at the time
under review and attempts to explain the reasons that prompted Gadiyev to present the problem
to the Russian reader in such a gloomy tone. The authors came to the conclusion that such reasons
include the general trend of Ossetian enlightenment aimed at criticizing traditional society, the
concept of the journal “Women’s Herald”, built into the rigid paradigm of the struggle against
prejudice for the “new” woman, as well as revolutionary nihilism and the nature of the work of
Tsomak Gadiyev himself.
