FROM THE HISTORY OF RAILWAY CONSTRUCTION IN RUSSIA AT THE BEGINNING OF THE 20TH CENTURIES: THE VLADIKAVKAZ VARIANT OF THE CAUCASUS PASSING RAILWAY

Abstract:
For Russia, with its boundless spaces, railways have always had a special strategic importance.
The favorable geopolitical position allowed the Russian Empire to claim the role of a transport
bridge connecting Europe and Asia, which would further allow the growth of the country’s
industrial power. All these factors were taken into account by statesmen, economists, and engineers
when designing railways, especially on the outskirts of the empire. For various reasons, a number
of important projects for the country could not be implemented. One of them is the Caucasian
Pass Railway. The publication is dedicated to the project to build a transshipment railway across
the Main Caucasus Range. The issue of constructing a railway connecting Transcaucasia with the
North Caucasus and the internal provinces of the empire was of great national importance for
Russia; it was repeatedly raised and considered in the highest government circles. The emergence
of the project for a transshipment railway from Vladikavkaz to Tiflis was primarily due to
considerations of a military-strategic nature, although later socio-economic factors began to
prevail over strategic ones. The Minister of War and the Caucasian governor initiated the creation
of this road, as they sought to ensure the rapid transfer of troops and equipment in case of military
campaigns. The main advantage of the Vladikavkaz-Tiflis pass road project was the following:
firstly, a new short route was established between the Caspian and Black seas, and secondly, the
distance between Transcaucasia and the rest of the empire was reduced. The published documents
reveal the entire difficult path in the approval of the Vladikavkaz direction of construction of
a transshipment railway through the Main Caucasus Range and the active participation of the
mayor of Vladikavkaz G.V. Baeva in making this decision.
