ON THE REPRESENTATION OF WORDS WITH THE COMPONENT NYMÆT IN THE OSSETIC NARTIADA

Abstract:
The article reveals the characteristic features of words denoting felt and burlap products in the
Ossetic, and which are reflected in the Ossetic epic. The relevance of the study lies in conducting
an interdisciplinary contextual analysis of craft vocabulary associated with the most developed
branch of cattle breeding – sheep breeding, which was the main occupation of the ancestors of the
Ossetians; its linguistic features, as well as reflection in products of folk arts and crafts. Historical
and ethnographic information on traditional Ossetian farming indicates a fairly widespread
use of wool (mainly sheep and less often goat), which is certainly associated with the spread of
transhumance sheep farming. The technique of making household items and clothing by felting
wool is rooted in the Scythian past of the Ossetians. In epic tales, wool and woolen products
are found in most known texts. Examples selected by a continuous sampling method from the
academic bilingual edition of the Ossetic heroic epic “Narts”, including the components nymæt/
nymæt, binag/buinag, were the subject of our analysis. The scientific novelty of the article lies in
the multidimensional consideration of the vocabulary of traditional farming – sheep breeding –
and products made from sheep wool, which were used not only to satisfy the needs of the family,
but also had a commercial value – “rich owners used hired labor, paying in wool” (B.A. Kaloev).
The results of the study led to the following conclusions: along with the nominatives nymæt/
nymæt in the meaning of outerwear – burka, the most common combinations in the texts of the
epic are nymætyn ekhs, binag ækhsæ, buynagin ækhsæ, buynag ækhsæ in the meaning of “felt
whip”, shau nymæt in the meaning of “black burka” “; whose lexical and semantic features have
been examined by us using general linguistic methods.
Keywords: Ossetian language, vocabulary of material management, felt, nomæt, epic lexicon, context, semantics.
