Abstract:
Political extremism continues to remain in the field of scientific interest of scientists from various fields of science: historians, lawyers, sociologists, psychologists, etc. Although the time of violent extremism is behind us, no one can say with certainty that it has passed irrevocably. From time to time, extremist events related to inter-ethnic or religious conflicts that take on a political issue occur in different regions of the country. This topic becomes relevant with the conduct of the Special Military Operation in Ukraine and migration flows from this country to Russia. The demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine recalled the events on the territory of Chechnya related to the fight against international terrorism. The purpose of this article is to analyze the forms and methods of extremist militant technologies tested on the territory of the Russian Federation at the end of the 20th and beginning of the 11th centuries. The objectives of the study are to analyze the reasons for the escalation of extremism in the south of the country, the forms and methods of political extremism, as well as to identify the role of external factors. We have paid close attention to the latter aspect in this article in order to refute once again the claims that Russia was fighting against Chechnya and the Chechens at that time. The training of militants, the supply of weapons, underground gangs, and monetary support for extremism are all links in the same chain of an external factor – to put pressure on the Russian political leadership and create a so-called “free Chechnya” on the territory of the Russian Federation as a springboard for the further collapse of the country. Using historical research methods, we have identified three stages of extremist activity in Chechnya and conducted a generalizing analysis of the forms and methods of political and religious extremism over a difficult historical period.
Keywords: political extremism, hostage taking, religious factor, gangs, Dudayev’s regime.
