THE SYSTEM OF KARACHAY-BALKAR ZOOMORPHIC IMAGES (ON THE BASIS OF HISTORICAL-HEROIC SONGS OF THE 13TH-15TH CENTURIES)
Berberov, Burkhan A.
Izvestia SOIGSI. 2024. IIS 52 (91). P.151-168.
Abstract: The article is dedicated to identifying zoomorphic images in Karachay-Balkar
historical-heroic songs of the 13th-15th centuries using elements of frequency analysis
based on the Python programming language. Through the analysis conducted, it was
established that the Karachay-Balkar historical-heroic songs of the 13th-15th centuries
reflect the images of thirty animals. The most popular among them are the images of the
horse, dog, and sheep, i.e., images of those animals that play a crucial role in the daily life
of the Karachays and Balkars. To form a coherent picture of the world, the article further
reveals the images of individual animals, including through comparative analysis aimed at
uncovering the discovered images in other cultures. Special attention by the author is given
to those zoomorphic images that are uniquely reflected in the Karachay-Balkar historicalheroic
songs of the 13th-15th centuries (for example, flies, camels, beavers), emphasizing
their unique significance in the cultural context of the Karachay-Balkar people. The results
of the analysis allow concluding that the zoomorphic images used in the Karachay-Balkar
historical-heroic songs are largely universal and find partial reflection in other cultures as
well. The conducted research contributes to a better understanding of the cultural heritage
of the Karachays and Balkars. Its results, in particular, can be used in the educational
sphere when teaching schoolchildren and students the Karachay-Balkar language, and
serve as a starting point for conducting and developing similar research in the context
of other languages, including those belonging to the Indo-European and Turkic language
groups.
Keywords: zoomorphic image, Karachay-Balkar folklore, historical-heroic song, frequency analysis, Karachay-Balkar language.
