ISLAM AND MODERNITY: GLOBAL, RUSSIAN AND NORTH CAUCASIAN MANIFESTATIONS (LATE XIX – EARLY XX CENTURY)

Ailarova, Svetlana A.
Izvestia SOIGSI. 2024. IIS 53 (92). P.26-42.
Abstract:
The problem of the article lies in the course of studying the interaction between the
culture of European Modernity and the confessional traditions of the mountain peoples, and
their understanding in North Caucasian public thought. The author focuses on the Russian
and North Caucasian manifestations of such a world historical and cultural movement
as Islamic modernism of the XIX - XX century. In the space of this discourse, the Muslim
intelligentsia of the North Caucasus at the beginning of the 20th century was able to enter
into an equal dialogue with the intellectual community of Europe and Russia and formulate
their vision of the future of the peoples of the region. Modernist tendencies were especially
pronounced in education (Jadidism) and the press. The magazine “Muslim” (published
by the Adyghe educator M.-B.Khadzhetlashe), the newspapers “Dawn of Dagestan” and
“Muslim Newspaper” (published by the Dagestani educator S.Gabiev) actively popularized
the Jadidist educational program, spread modernist ideas, and nurtured new adherents of
the renewal and reformation of Islam in the depths of the Muslim society of Russia. In S.
Gabiev’s book “Arabs, Islam and Arab-Muslim Culture”, the author introduces the Russian
reader to Muslim history and culture, debunks negative stereotypes about Islam that are
ingrained in the public consciousness. Tsalikov, an Ossetian writer, publicist, politician,
one of the leaders of the Russian Muslim movement, sought a symbiosis of the culture
of the West and the East with his intellectual studies and the activities of a politician,
comprehending the revival of Muslim peoples through the peak manifestation of European
political thought - Marxism. The desire of the North Caucasian intelligentsia to build a
dialogue between Islam and modernity is part of the intellectual history of Muslim peoples
in the 20th century.
