A MARGINAL HERO IN THE PROSE OF IRLAN KHUGAEV

Aguzarova, Elina V.
Izvestia SOIGSI. 2026. Issue 60 (99). P.132-149.
Abstract:

The article examines the phenomenon of the marginal hero in the prose works of the contemporary Ossetian Russian-language writer Irlan Sergeevich Khugaev. Based on the short story “The Swallows Have Arrived” and the novellas “The Luck” and “The Devil”, the author analyzes the typological features of characters situated on the social and existential periphery. The study identifies the artistic techniques and methods used to create marginal characters in the writer’s oeuvre and traces the connection with the tradition of portraying the “superfluous man” in Russian classical literature. Special attention is paid to the national-cultural context of Khugaev’s work as a representative of Ossetian Russian-language literature, which exists at the intersection of two cultural traditions. The research employs comparative-typological and hermeneutic methods of literary analysis, which help to reveal the author’s distinctive vision of social and spiritual alienation in the contemporary world.

Keywords: marginal hero, Ossetian Russian-language literature, Irlan Khugaev, social alienation, character typology, “superfluous man”, declassed hero, existential crisis.
