THE LEXICAL-SEMANTIC FIELD OF “RUHS “LIGHT” / TALYNG “DARKNESS” IN THE OSSETIAN LANGUAGE (BASED ON THE IRON AND DIGOR DIALECTS).

Abstract:

The relevance of this study stems from the growing attention of linguists to various issues of the lexical and semantic structure of language. In modern linguistics, the anthropocentric paradigm is acquiring particular significance, leading to a shift in research focus from language as a natural phenomenon to humans as linguistic individuals. In this context, the field method of language research occupies a special place, allowing for the application of such vocabulary grouping methods as semantic fields, lexical-semantic fields, lexical-semantic groups, and thematic groups. The scientific novelty of this study lies primarily in the fact that there are very few studies on semantic fields in the Ossetian language. In particular, the lexical-semantic field “ruhs ‘light’ / talyng ‘darkness’” is subjected to a thorough analysis and structuring for the first time. The aim of this study is a structural analysis of the lexical-semantic field “ruhs ‘light’ / talyng ‘darkness’” in modern Ossetian, drawing on linguistic material from both the Iron and Digor dialects. The study utilized linguistic observation, descriptive analysis, and distributional analysis. A structural-semantic approach was employed to examine the semantics of the core lexemes of the group. Illustrative linguistic material was collected through continuous sampling and interviews. In the course of the study, the semiotic structure of the nuclear lexemes of the lexical-semantic field ruhs “light” and talyng “darkness” in the modern Ossetian language was examined, their primary and secondary figurative meanings were determined, the word-formation potential of the lexemes ruhs “light” and talyng “darkness” was considered, the part-of-speech affiliation of units of derivational chains was determined, homonymous and synonymous relations within the group were considered.
