FROM THE EPISTOLARY HERITAGE: B.A. KALOEV – L.A. CHIBIROV. (ON THE B.A. KALOEV’S 110TH ANNIVERSARY).

Abstract:
The correspondence between Boris Aleksandrovich Kaloev and Ludwig Alekseevich Chibirov, two prominent scholars in the field of ethnographic Caucasian studies, is presented for publication in connection with B.A. Kaloev’s 110th anniversary. It is of great value for research into the history of Ossetian studies during the period from 1993 to 2003, a period of great interest to both society and science. This correspondence, which lasted for 40 years, vividly reflects not only the relationship between two eminent scientists passionate about their research, but also an entire era in the development of their field. The main scientific topics discussed in the correspondence include the publication of monographs, peer review, publications, dissertation defenses, opposition, ethnographic expeditions, and participation in numerous conferences, academic anniversaries, relationships with colleagues. The scholars exchange details of their research activities, their plans for preparing scientific papers, for choosing reviewers, for collaborating with colleagues, with publishing houses and editorial boards. Many letters express gratitude for “gifts” – their own books and articles. The correspondence is interesting because it simultaneously reflects events in their personal biographies, the scientists’ scientific paths, and their perceptions of surrounding reality. Behind many of the letters lie life and research experiences, emotional experiences, searches, doubts, and attitudes toward colleagues, their health and mood, and their work (perhaps not entirely devoid of a subjective approach in places). The published letters have been preserved in L.A. Chibirov’s personal archive. Despite the loss of some of the letters sent by Ludwig Alekseevich to Boris Aleksandrovich, the correspondence allows us to reconstruct a comprehensive picture of the life of the scientific community.
