Abstract:
The central problem of this study is the identification and historical analysis of elements of
magic in Ossetian folk Islam at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The concept of “Ossetian
folk Islam” is defined and its features are identified. The socio-historical and cultural factors in the
formation of the specific religious worldview of the Muslim part of Ossetian society in the specified
period are determined. Within the framework of the undertaken study, using the method of critical
reading of historical sources, an analysis of selected descriptions of magical practices in religious rites
that existed in the Muslim part of Ossetia is carried out. The article examines cases of agricultural
(on the occasion of calling for rain), funeral, healing and other types of magic, separating the
“Islamic” from the “non-Islamic” in some cases of ritual practice. The method of historicism serves
as the main methodological approach to studying the problem. Due to the fact that this study is
synchronic, it is carried out within the framework of the structuralism of K. Levi-Strauss, according
to which all cultural systems (language, mythology, religion, art, customs, traditions) are studied as
sign systems. The scientific relevance of the study is due to the critically small number of studies on
the designated problem. In turn, the social relevance of the topic is determined by the steady growth
of society’s interest in the historical roots and problems of its own religious self-identification. The
main source base for this study was made up of periodical press materials containing notes and
essays that illustrate various fragments of the life of traditional Ossetian societies that professed
Islam in the period under review.
Keywords: magic; folk Islam; religion of the Ossetians at the turn of the 19th-20th centuries; narrative sources.
