Abstract:
The article is devoted to the study of the features of the development of the North Caucasus by
representatives of the Russian public. The formation of a state in which many peoples are united
with their own unique culture is always a long and very complex process. The formation of a single
cultural space contributed to the inviolability and integrity of the state, the formation of a common
basis for the population belonging to different nations, but living in one country. The expansion
of the Russian Empire in a southern direction led to intense mutual influence of Russian culture
and the cultures of the peoples of the North Caucasus region. To pursue a reasonable policy in the
Caucasus, it was necessary to understand the peculiarities of the established customs and traditions
of the local peoples. For this purpose, numerous information was needed, which was provided
by both official representatives of the Russian authorities, specially sent to the Caucasus on duty,
as well as Russian and foreign travelers, scientists, writers, poets, and Decembrists exiled to the
Caucasus. Thanks to their common efforts in the first half of the 19th century. a significant array of
sources in the field of history, ethnography and geography of the region was collected and classified.
All collected materials subsequently formed the basis for their work on the North Caucasus, which
was popular among the Russian public. Gradually, the Caucasian Mineral Waters resorts became
popular among the Russian elite, where thousands of vacationers arrived every year, having heard
about the healing properties of the water, mountain air and mild climate of the region. Separately,
it is necessary to say about the legacy of Russian soldiers, officers and generals who participated
in the Caucasian War. Their memories and works of art helped Russian society to better imagine
the picture of the region, to trace the chronicle of the events of the war, which made it possible to
formulate the correct political line in relation to the North Caucasian peoples, the calming of the
region and its soft entry into the Russian Empire. The theme of the Caucasus occupied a prominent
place in Russian poetry and prose. Outstanding figures of the golden age of Russian culture did not
ignore it. A.S. Pushkin, M.Yu. Lermontov, L.N. Tolstoy in his works presented a vivid picture of the
life and everyday life of Caucasian society in the 19th century. Russian literature of this period is
characterized by the desire to convey the way of life of the mountaineers and to correctly convey it to
Russian readers. All this contributed to a better understanding of the specifics of the region and the
formation of the cultural unity of our peoples.
