PHRASEOLOGISMS WITH SOMATISM FYNDZ ‘NOSE’ IN THE OSSETIAN LANGUAGE
Abaeva, Fatima O.
Izvestia SOIGSI. 2024. IIS 54 (93). P.112-122.
Abstract: Somatic vocabulary, as is well known, dates to the oldest fund of the language; accordingly, it
constitutes an archaic stratum in the Ossetian language. Consequently, the phraseological units,
which include somatisms, are from the most ancient fund of the Ossetian language; their origins
are in the most diverse areas of human activity. Cf: Language lies beyond measure and number’
(N.S. Trubetskoy), which motivates the complexity of their classification in the aspect of origin.
Anatomical phraseological expressions are surprisingly fruitful, so only those related to parts of
the head - fyndz ‘nose’ - are taken for analysis. The article deals with phraseological units of the
Ossetian language denoting such a subject concept as the somatism fynndz ‘nose’, as well as its
derivatives. The aim of the article is to identify the corpus of phraseological units with the somatism
fynndz; to describe them; to determine their semantic and structural features; to discover the
connection between the general meaning of ready-made constructions and the sum of meanings of
the components of which they are composed. As a result of the research, it was found out that the
characteristic features of phraseological phrases with the somatism fyndz ‘nose’ are multistructural
(two-, three- and multi-component), polysemantic and figurative. The range of thematic belongings
of phraseological units is surprisingly wide. Various aspects of a person’s life: his attitude to
it and to everything that surrounds him. Markers: ‘one can achieve more with peace than with
weapons’, ‘respect for elders’, ‘omen’, ‘importance of labour’, ‘characteristic of a person’, ‘limitedness’,
‘fearlessness’, ‘illness’, ‘rashness’, ‘dexterity’, ‘health’, ‘equal conditions for all’, ‘caution’, ‘one’s own
destiny’, ‘mythological’. In idioms - manifestation of various human emotions (chagrin, sadness,
longing, interest, attention, fatigue, exhaustion, embarrassment, shame, shyness, irritation, anger,
resentment); properties and qualities (boastfulness, arrogance, self-control, fearlessness, courage,
intelligence, reason, recklessness, experience, maturity, youth, inexperience, agility, laziness, deceit,
victory, intimacy).
