KOSTA KHETAGUROV AND SHAKESPEARE: ON THE ROLE OF INTERCULTURAL DIALOGUE WITH FOREIGN LITERATURE IN KOSTA KHETAGUROV’S EPISTOLARY HERITAGE

Abstract: K. Khetagurov played a special role in the history of Ossetian artistic culture, becoming the
first Ossetian professional poet, prose writer, artist, playwright, publicist, founder of the Ossetian
literary language. Russian literature and Ossetian folklore became the foundation for the formation
of his creative method. He not only brilliantly mastered Russian literature, but also adopted its
ability to absorb and reproduce on national foundation the best of what was created by the world
artistic culture, primarily literature. The connection of K. Khetagurov’s work with Russian literature
has received much attention in literary criticism, but his role in creating a dialogue with foreign
literature has hardly been studied. The purpose of the work is to consider the role of interliterary
dialogue as an important component of intertextuality. The epistolary heritage of Kosta Khetagurov
and some tragedies by W. Shakespeare were chosen as the object of the study. In letters addressed to
the educated part of the intelligentsia familiar with Russian and foreign literature – close friends,
acquaintances, relatives – Kosta uses quotes, allusions, reminiscences, references to Shakespeare’s
tragedies. The article examines specific examples of the inclusion of fragments of Shakespeare’s
tragedies “Hamlet” and “Othello”, their role in creating an intercultural dialogue and the methods
of its creating. Particular attention is paid to the semantic, emotional, motive transformation of
Shakespeare’s epistolary texts, which made it possible to bring them closer to modern issues and,
having overcome the intimacy and limited genre focus, turn them into full-fledged works of art.
