Abstract:
This article analyzes the color lexemes “qara” – “black”, “ak” – “white” and “qyzyl” – “red” in the
Karachay-Balkar historical and heroic songs. The frequency of using the triad white-black-red in the
works of oral folklore is a confirmed pattern for all people. During the study, the symbolic meanings
and lexical definitions of these color names in the creation of imagery in folklore poetic texts are
established. It is noted that each nation has its own built system of color symbolism, which over time
lost their cognitive meanings and acquired artistic and spiritual-moral meanings. A special place
in historical and heroic songs is given to the most dominant symbols of the color designation “qara”
– “black”, the reason for this is that the works mainly have a tragic plot. It is indicated that the
coloronym “qara” – “black” symbolizes dark color, lack of sunlight, death, darkness and chaos, but
this color lexeme in the studied songs has a binary meaning, unites two semes: negative and positive.
The color lexeme “ak” - “white” in the studied poetic texts is less common. When describing this
coloronym, its functional uniqueness is revealed. The third color lexeme “qizil” – “red” is considered
the middle link of the color triad. It is symbolized with unholy intentions, villains, and also a symbol
of fire, anxiety, war and life. It is noted that the lexeme “qizil” – “red” in historical and heroic songs
mainly has a meaning associated with blood. During the study, it was established that the meanings
of the white-black-red triad according to color perceptions, as well as to enhance the meaning, could
change and have many colors and meanings in the structure. The author concludes that colors in
folklore texts are mainly associated with superstitions. The main function of color lexemes is to
reproduce images, symbols in the color picture of the world.
