Abstract:
The article publishes for the first time the text of the Ossetian fairy tale on the plot of ATU, SUS, AA, UOVS 313 “Kuyrysmædzæuædzhy arg’au” (“Sorcerer”) with a translation into Russian and comments. Fairy tales on this plot in the Ossetian fairy tale tradition correlate with the context of the entire spiritual tradition of the Ossetians and, in this regard, are of interest. The plot of ATU, SUS, AA 313 also has correspondences in the Nart epic of the Ossetians, namely, with the plot associated with the dove-girls in the cycle “The Beginning of the Narts”. The plot in question has an international distribution, recorded in many fairy tale indices; it is especially widely and in an archaic form represented in the East Slavic fairy tale tradition. The plot of 313 AT, SUS is not as common in the Ossetian fairy tale fund as in the Russian one, but the situation of the meeting of the hero and three bird-maidens on the shore of a lake (the sacred center of the mythological space) is actively used by storytellers in the Ossetian folklore tradition. The title of the fairy tale “kuyrysmædzæuæg” refers us to the traditional religious beliefs of the Ossetians, namely, the idea of a mystical journey of souls to the “other” world on New Year’s Eve, which was called “Kuris”, with the aim of bringing good to society. The plot under consideration has an obvious cosmogonic character: the hero’s father and the hero himself travel to the upper and lower worlds with the aim of organizing the mythological space, i.e. they are cultural heroes; the fairy tale characters inherited the function of the organizer/organizers of space from the characters of the myth. The examination of one Ossetian folk tale, in this case, a magical one, gives us the opportunity to identify the special features inherent in each folklore text; in our case, the connection with the idea of a journey to the “other” world of “Kuris”. At the same time, we examined a specific folklore text in comparison with other variants and with another fairy tale tradition (Russian).
