MIDDLE AGES FUNERAL MONUMENTS IN KABARDINO-BALKARIA(MEDIEVAL KABARDIAN MOUNDS)
Makoev, Beslan N.
Izvestia SOIGSI. 2023. IIS 48 (87).
Abstract: The article is devoted to the study of Kabardian mounds located on the territory of Kabardino‑
Balkaria. The paper considers all the characteristic features of the Kabardian burial mounds, analyzes
the history of their study. Excavations of Kabardian mounds were carried out since the end of the
19th century. Already in the Soviet period, the issues of dating burial mounds and ethno‑cultural
belonging to the Adyghe ethnic group were resolved. From the end of the 19th century to the present, a
significant number of mound complexes were studied, which made it possible to accumulate primary
knowledge about the ethnogenesis of the Adyghe tribes, and the system of settlement. But, despite all
the work done, there remain many problem areas associated with the localization and dating of the
Kabardian kurgan complexes, which in turn encourages their systematic study.
Keywords: Kabardino‑Balkaria, Middle Ages, Kabardian burial mounds, archeology, earth embankment, excavations.
