M.S. DZASOKHOV’S POETRY OF THE 1960-80S IN RUSSIAN: ON THE QUESTION OF THE TRANSLATION METHOD

Izvestia SOIGSI. 2024. IIS 53 (92). P.133-145.
Abstract:
The article presents an analysis of Russian-language poetry translations by
M.S. Dzasokhov from the 1960s-80s, revealing the ways of reflecting the content plan
and the expression plan of the originals. In the lyric collections “Polosha ruko na serde”,
“Serdtse i vodapud”, “Gosti iz Baraguyn”, “Ossetia, narnaya storona” in Russian, different
translation strategies are demonstrated. The author of the study, in the course of comparing
multilingual texts (original → translation), shows the similarities and differences in the
transmission of meaning, stylistic expressiveness of words, national color, cases of additions
and omissions in translation, examples of changes in the equirhythmicity and equilinearity
of the verse and the poetic concept of the author in general. It is concluded that when
transmitting the content-formal levels of the original, the adequate approach predominantly
dominates (for example, in the translations of L. Shereshevsky). During translation,
changes in the author’s intentions are revealed - in the Russian text, in the same emotional
tone, his own vision of the depicted reality is given, the form of poetic speech is partially
transformed (translated by V. Tushnova, A. Nikolaev). To express the original thought,
the translators offer their own interpretation “to the tune” of the original. However, such
a (free) approach to conveying the original text is only occasionally encountered in the
translation practice of V. Tushnova, A. Nikolaev, N. Zlotnikov. Within the framework of
translation methods, a combined approach is also observed: the first part of the poem is the
author’s text; the second is the translator’s addition to the original. The poem in Russian is
only thematically connected with the work of M. Dzasokhov (translated by N. Zlotnikov).
Keywords: M.S. Dzasokhov, poetry, literary translation, equirhythmicity, equilinearity, combined translation, author’s intention, pragmatics.
