Abstract:
The Ossetian religious-mythological system is a complex phenomenon in its historical origin,
which has repeatedly become the subject of scientific research by various authors. However, there
have been no works in the field of musical folkloristics devoted to the issues of musical and poetic
peculiarities of religious and mythological songs until today, which is the reason for the relevance
of the present study. The article deals with the issues of musical and stylistic peculiarities of the
song dedicated to the Patron Saint of Women and Children Madymayræm. The aim of the article
is to identify samples of a song dedicated to this patron saint, notation of audio materials and
determination of musical and poetic features of this genre. Archival and published sources served as
material for the study. The transcripts of the 1920-1930 recordings stored in the Scientific Archive
of the North Ossetian Institute for Humanitarian and Social Studies and the Phonogram archive of
the Institute of Russian Literature (Pushkin House) were also analysed. The study revealed that all
available samples of religious and mythological songs dedicated to Madymayræm are typologically
homogeneous; they are performed by a soloist and a group of singers without instrumental
accompaniment; musical and stylistic features are similar to ritual songs accompanying movement
(round dances, songs of going round courtyards). Unfortunately, the song dedicated to Madymayræm
has completely disappeared from Ossetian ritual practice. Our attempts to make field recordings of
this song at the present stage of the tradition’s existence failed. Thus, the practical value of the present
study is that the materials discovered can be a serious help in returning the genre under study to
the structure of Ossetian rituals at a new stage of its historical development in forms adequate to
the nature of folklore.
