Abstract: The article attempts to show that the aspectual system of the Ossetian language stands somewhat apart within the Scythian group of Iranian languages to which it belongs. Due to its long-term proximity to European, especially Eastern European languages, the verbal vocabulary of the Ossetian language has absorbed some features characteristic of Slavic languages. In particular, Ossetian preverbs, like Slavic prefixes, have a dual function: verb aspect-formation and word-formation. Only the second function is typical of the Iranian languages. The method of forming the perfective verb forms with the help of preverbs, distinguishes the Ossetian language from other Iranian languages. The perfective function of the verb prefixes brings the Ossetian verb system closer to the Slavic language group, especially to Russian, with which it is connected by a long areal proximity. Contrastive methodology has played a significant role in the development of scientific aspectological research into Ossetic, making it possible to uncover the dominance of the morphological category of aspect and a wide range of linguistic tools for expressing different aspectual nuances. Russian-Ossetian parallels allow us to penetrate deeper into the essence of linguistic phenomena, while enriching both linguistic systems with new data. The method of contrastive analysis makes it possible to carry out linguistic analysis in the most objective way. In our case, the original text of ‘Tales of the Narts’ and its translation into Russian are involved in the analysis. After all, the uniqueness of any natural language is a peculiar reflection of the worldview of its speakers.
