MATERIAL, TECHNICAL AND STRUCTURAL MODERNIZATION OF TECHNICAL UNIVERSITIES IN THE MID-1950S-1960S (BY THE MATERIALS OF THE NORTH CAUCASUS MINING AND METALLURGICAL INSTITUTE).

Abstract:
The article examines the issues of material, technical and structural modernization of the North Caucasus Mining and Metallurgical Institute (NCMMI) in the mid-1950s–1960s. It is emphasized that their decision was in line with the USSR’s regional-focused development strategy in the context of the beginning scientific and technological revolution. It is indicated that NCMMI was considered one of the flagships of the modernization of the higher education system in the country, primarily as a technical university. During these years, thanks to the construction and provision of modern equipment for new academic buildings, technical workshops, and specialized laboratories, as well as improved housing conditions for staff and students, the institute’s material and technical resources were significantly expanded and strengthened, creating the conditions for implementing structural reforms. From the early 1950s to the mid-1960s, the number of faculties increased from two to seven, and the number of specialties in which training was conducted increased from five to thirteen. The university’s structure, established during these years, remained virtually unchanged until the late 1980s. The conclusion is that the reorganization of the institute, based on the expansion of old and the creation of new faculties, their reorientation towards in-demand specialties in the mining and non-ferrous metallurgy industries, transformed SKMMI into a leading educational institution of national significance, with the rights of an experimental center for the training of new specialists in mining and non-ferrous metallurgy, as well as the publication of the all-Union industry scientific and technical journal “News of Higher Educational Institutions. Non-ferrous Metallurgy”.
