ON VERBAL WORD FORMATION IN THE DIGORI DIALECT OF THE OSSETIAN LANGUAGE

Abstract:
This article is devoted to verb word formation in the Digor dialect of the Ossetian language. In
the modern Ossetian language today, three methods of verb formation are distinguished: prefixal,
analytical, and analytical in combination with prefixation. The subject of this study was the prefixal
method of word formation. The relevance of the study is due to the fact that at the present stage,
both in foreign and domestic linguistics, there is an increased interest in various aspects of the
grammar of the Ossetian language, an integral part of which is verb word formation. In addition,
most of the existing works on this issue are based on the linguistic material of the Iron dialect, the
Digor material is given in them only as illustrations to certain theoretical calculations. Meanwhile,
without a systematic and comprehensive study of all grammatical forms of both main dialects of
the Ossetian language, it is quite difficult to talk about the objectivity of the results obtained in the
course of research. The novelty of the study is that the work is the first attempt to determine the word-
formation models of prefixal verb word-formation based on the modes of action that are marked
by certain preverbs. The purpose of the study is to determine the main word-formation models of
prefixal verb word-formation in the Digor dialect of the Ossetian language. The main research
methods are linguistic description, component analysis, informant survey, and questionnaire. The
study revealed that in the area of prefixal verb formation, three main word-formation models are
distinguished: verbs with locative-spatial meaning, verbs of terminative-temporal modes of action,
perfect-resultative verbs. In addition, the degree of productivity of preverbs varies depending on the
mode of action, the marker of which they act.
