Abstract:

A significant block of working notes preserved in the archival heritage of the famous Ossetian scholar Evgenia Georgievna Pchelina (1895–1972) is dedicated to the social institution of the kavdasards. Her desire to study each of the issues raised in their entirety has been repeatedly noted. One of the questions in the study of various aspects of the life of traditional Ossetian society was the analogies of the phenomena under consideration among the Caucasian peoples surrounding Ossetians. This article presents unpublished archival materials (scattered working notes) from the St. Petersburg Branch of the Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences, devoted to the development of E.G. Pchelina’s issue of analogies of the social institution of the kavdasards in other traditional societies. The Caucasian peoples, in whose traditions Pchelina noted analogies to the institution of the kavdasards, are as follows: Chechens, Ingush; residents of Dagestan; Kumyks; Adygeans. Going beyond the region under consideration, Pchelina notes possible analogies in Russian and Tunguska traditional societies. It is necessary to note the significant bibliographic base underlying the research work of E. Pchelina. Pchelina did not write a complete article dedicated to understanding analogies. There are no analytical notes on this thema, however, the essay “Cavdasards — born in a manger”, published in 2024, makes it clear that the most obvious analogy for E.G. Pchelina (at least at the time of writing the essay) was thw criticized hypothesis of F.I. Leontovich: «In terms of their social origin, the kavdasards were similar to the ancient Russian “otroki” and “chadi”, the ancestors of the “boyar children” descended from “roby”, slaves».
